What exactly is sexual dysfunction? Sexual dysfunction is a problem that can happen during any phase of the sexual response cycle. In general, it prevents you from experiencing satisfaction from sexual activity.

Amongst other things, the sexual response cycle traditionally includes plateau, orgasm, excitement and resolution. Arousal and desire are both part of the excitement phase of the sexual response. Its important to note that females don’t always go through these phases in order.

Sexual dysfunction is common, but many people don’t like to discuss it. Treatment options are available, though, you should discuss this with your partner and healthcare provider.

Who is Affected?

Sexual dysfunction can affect both males and females at any point in their life, however, it’s much more common in those forty years and older and is typically associated with aging and declining health.

What are the Symptoms?

We are aware that sexual dysfunction can be caused both by both physical and psychological issues. For example, diabetes, heart and vascular disease, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalance, kidney or liver failure and some medication can affect sexual function.

Some psychological causes include work-related stress and anxiety, concern about sexual performance, relationship problems, depression and concerns about body image and the effects of sexual trauma can all contribute to sexual dysfunction.

How is Sexual Dysfunction Diagnosed?

In many cases, most recognize something’s interfering with your enjoyment of a sexual relationship. Healthcare professionals begin with a history of symptoms and a physical, Some testing may be required to rule out certain possibilities.

How is Sexual Dysfunction Diagnosed Con't?

We typically look at sexual attitudes and other contributing factors such as fear, anxiety, past sexual abuse, relationships, medication, drug abuse, etc, will help us understand the underlying cause of the problem and recommend the right treatment.

How is Sexual Dysfunction Treated

Most types of sexual dysfunction, can be resolved by treating the underlying physical or psychological problems. Other strategies can include:

  • Medication, Sex Therapy, Education
  • Mechanical Aids, Behavioral Treatments
  • Sex Therapy

Can Sexual Dysfunction be Cured?

The successful completion of treatment for sexual dysfunction really depends on the underlying cause of the problem. The outlook is quite good for dysfunction that is related to a condition that can be treated or reversed.
